Buoyant Breakthrough: DemoSATH Floating Wind Project Secures Milestone Certification
In a significant stride toward harnessing the power of offshore renewable energy, Saitec Offshore Technologies has achieved a major milestone in the development of cleaner and more efficient floating wind technology. The DemoSATH project, in collaboration with RWE and Kansai Electric Power, has been awarded the final prototype certification by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV).
This certification marks a crucial advancement in innovative SATH (Swinging Around Twin Hull) technology, ensuring that the DemoSATH2MU floating platform meets rigorous safety, structural integrity, and operational feasibility standards. The certification process involved an exhaustive review of various engineering aspects, including the platform’s basic design, mooring systems, and electrical low and medium voltage systems.
The DemoSATH platform stands out with its robust engineering and innovative design, making it an exemplary model for offshore floating wind technology. “Obtaining the final conformity statement for DemoSATH’s prototype certification is an important milestone for us,” said Irati Larrinaga, Foundation Package Lead Engineer of Saitec Offshore Technologies. “It validates the hard engineering work that our team has been doing for over a decade. Moreover, it represents a significant step forward in the development of SATH technology, having undergone a thorough third-party assessment by Bureau Veritas, a globally recognized classification society.”
This achievement not only solidifies Saitec Offshore Technologies’ position as a leader in the offshore wind industry but also paves the way for future deployments in commercial floating wind farms globally. The DemoSATH project is set to play a pivotal role in transitioning the energy sector toward cleaner and sustainable solutions.
The platform’s operations are supported by a hybrid mooring system connected to drag anchors, capable of holding a 2 MW wind turbine with a rotor diameter of 96 meters. This innovative setup ensures that the platform remains stable and operational even in challenging offshore conditions.
Bureau Veritas’ certification process has confirmed that the DemoSATH platform adheres to stringent safety standards outlined in BV NR 572. This comprehensive certification process has been essential in validating the engineering aspects of the project, ensuring its preparedness for commercial-scale implementation.
“We are proud of what we are achieving with the DemoSATH project,” added Irati Larrinaga. “This milestone is a testament to our commitment to advancing cutting-edge solutions in renewable energy.”
