bp Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT) and EOG Resources Trinidad have recently agreed to partner on the development of the Coconut natural gas field offshore Trinidad and Tobago. The field, located in the Columbus basin in 260 ft of water, is the latest project being delivered through the joint venture between bpTT and EOG.
The Coconut field has been a long-standing project with a rich history. It was first discovered by bp Trinidad and Tobago in 2005. The final investment decision for this project has been made, and the first gas is expected to be produced by 2027. Coconut will be a 50/50 joint venture, with EOG serving as the operator. This partnership is expected to accelerate gas production from the field and further enhance BP’s natural gas portfolio.
The Coconut project follows similar collaborations between bpTT and EOG, including previous ventures like the EMZ, Sercan, and Banyan, with the Mento project scheduled to come online in 2025. This latest joint venture underscores bpTT’s commitment to developing deepwater resources, enhancing its overall gas production capacity.
The strategic importance of this project lies in its ability to feed into Trinidad’s premier liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, Atlantic LNG. This facility is a significant contributor to Trinidad and Tobago’s economy, with BP and Shell holding a joint stake in the facility. The integration of the Coconut field with existing discoveries is expected to add substantially to Trinidad’s LNG output, thereby supporting the country’s position as one of the world’s largest LNG exporters.
In addition to the Coconut project, bp Trinidad and Tobago operates 16 offshore platforms and two onshore processing facilities, covering approximately 680,000 acres off the east coast of Trinidad. The company’s ongoing operations in Trinidad, including the Ginger field development and other gas growth opportunities, are critical to ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness in the region.
Overall, the Coconut project represents a significant milestone in Trinidad and Tobago’s oil and gas industry, further boosting the country’s gas production capacity and contributing to its ongoing energy transition efforts. This partnership reaffirms the charter with which both companies have been operating in the region, focusing on delivering high-margin gas growth while ensuring environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
