Centrica has taken a significant step in its journey towards a low-carbon future by engaging Exceed for a comprehensive hydrogen study on the North Sea Rough reservoir. This move is crucial for the UK’s energy security and underscores Centrica’s commitment to decarbonization.
The Rough reservoir, located in the southern North Sea, has been a stalwart of natural gas storage for over three decades. With its potential to cover more than half of the UK’s hydrogen storage needs, the field presents a unique opportunity to transition from storing natural gas to hydrogen. Centrica has long-term ambitions to transform Rough into the world’s largest long-duration hydrogen storage facility, a goal that could be supported by a £2 billion investment.
To achieve this vision, Centrica has awarded Exceed with a contract for a detailed study focused on hydrogen storage needs at the North Sea Rough reservoir. The study will provide critical insights into the technical, operational, and regulatory aspects required for the redevelopment of the field as a hydrogen storage facility. This development is part of Centrica’s broader strategy to bolster the UK’s energy security by decarbonizing its energy mix and increasing the country’s resilience against supply disruptions.
A significant element of this project is the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract, which involves the development of new pipelines, an unmanned offshore installation, and onshore injection facilities at the Easington Gas Terminal. This infrastructure upgrade will be essential in making the Rough field hydrogen-ready and positioning it as a key player in the UK’s hydrogen economy.
Steve Nicol, Executive President at Wood (a partner in the project), highlighted Wood’s strong heritage in the UK’s offshore and onshore sectors, emphasizing the company’s expertise in modifying and redeveloping existing infrastructure to provide safe and reliable energy for the UK’s future requirements.
The successful completion of this study is contingent upon government support and regulatory backing. Centrica is eager to collaborate with the government to establish a supportive framework that would underpin gas storage investment in the UK. This cooperation is essential for unlocking the full potential of the Rough field and realizing Centrica’s ambitious goals.
In summary, Centrica’s engagement with Exceed for the hydrogen study at the North Sea Rough reservoir represents a crucial milestone in the energy transition journey. With its extensive expertise and commitment to low-carbon solutions, Centrica aims to create a more sustainable and resilient energy system for the UK, leveraging the potential of hydrogen storage to drive economic growth and environmental sustainability.
