Colombian oil and gas company Ecopetrol SA has initiated scheduled maintenance works at its Refinería de Cartagena SAS (Reficar) refinery, located on Colombia’s northern coast. The maintenance involves the replacement of more than 1.2 million pounds of catalyst across three processing units: hydrocracking, hydrogen production, and sulfur recovery. This extensive catalyst replacement is the largest such operation undertaken by Reficar and is crucial to ensuring compliance with Colombian government regulations for fuel quality.
The maintenance period, which began on July 22 and is expected to last for 50 days, also includes general inspections and repairs on various equipment, including unidentified compressors, motors, pipes, and exchangers. This comprehensive maintenance program aims to guarantee safer and more efficient operations at Reficar’s refinery.
In recent developments, the Cartagena refinery has began delivering premium Euro 4-quality gasoline with a maximum sulfur content of 15 ppm, compared to its previous supply of gasoline containing 50 ppm of sulfur. This upgrade aligns with Reficar’s commitment to improving environmental performance and meeting international fuel-quality standards.
Furthermore, the refinery has undertaken various initiatives to enhance its environmental performance, such as the installation of a solar farm, carbon capture and utilization pilot plants, and a water neutrality project. These projects are part of Ecopetrol’s broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality for its operations by 2050.
The maintenance program will not impact the refinery’s supply of transportation fuels to the Colombian market, ensuring continued operations without disruptions. The overall investment for this maintenance event is $243 million, highlighting the company’s commitment to maintaining and upgrading its infrastructure.
