Viridien, formerly known as CGG, has commenced the Laconia 3D ocean-bottom node (OBN) multi-client seismic program in the US Gulf of Mexico. This project spans 330 Outer Continental Shelf blocks in the Garden Banks and Keathley Canyon protraction areas and is supported by industry funding. The acquisition phase began in July 2024, with the initial products expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2025.
To enhance the quality of the resulting images and subsurface information, Viridien will record extra-long-offset full-azimuth OBN data and utilize the Sercel TPS, an environmentally friendly low-frequency marine seismic source. This dataset is ideal for Viridien’s elastic full-waveform inversion (E-FWI), which will maximize subsalt imaging and reservoir delineation.
Dechun Lin, Viridien’s executive vice president of Earth Data, emphasized that this survey will deliver best-in-class images to reveal unprecedented subsalt detail and previously hidden resource potential. This efforts will revitalize the underlying data and provide a better understanding of the complex subsalt geology and deep targets associated with the area, aiding both exploration and the continuing development of discovered energy resources.
The company is showcasing this work at booth 823 at SEG and AAPG’s IMAGE 2024 event in Houston. This exhibit highlights presentations by Viridien and other essential industry events.
