### ONS 2024: Kongsberg Maritime Thruster Receives DNV’s Silent-E Notation
Kongsberg Maritime has achieved a significant milestone by having its rim-drive azimuth thruster receive the esteemed Silent-E notation from Det Norske Veritas (DNV). This certification marks the first of its kind for the thruster, demonstrating its superior acoustic performance.
The thruster was installed on the new Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) Norwind Hurricane and tested during a recent trial. The results showed a remarkable reduction in underwater noise pollution, a crucial aspect in protecting marine life and preserving underwater habitats.
The hydrodynamics specialist at Kongsberg Maritime, Leif Vartdal, explained that rim-drive thrusters are inherently quieter than traditional thrusters due to their simpler design with fewer moving parts and excellent hydrodynamic characteristics. Tip vortex cavitation from propeller blade tips is a significant issue in traditional thruster designs, but rim-drive thrusters eliminate this by using a ring propeller without blade tips, significantly reducing noise generation.
Moreover, the rim-drive thruster offers additional benefits such as energy savings and reduced maintenance costs because of the simplified propulsion system with fewer mechanical components. This translates to enhanced operational efficiency and a lower total cost of ownership, aligning with Kongsberg Maritime’s commitment to providing sustainable and cost-effective solutions for the maritime industry.
The new Silent-E notation is a testament to Kongsberg Maritime’s dedication to developing environmentally friendly propulsion solutions. The company is actively exhibiting this innovation at ONS 2024 in Stavanger, showcasing its contributions to a quieter and more sustainable future for the offshore industry.
