TGS assessing potential for renewable energies offshore Cabo Verde

TGS Embarks on Ambitious Renewable Energy Project Offshore Cabo Verde

Island of Fogo, Cabo Verde

In a significant move towards enhancing the renewable energy landscape, TGS, a leading provider of technology for the offshore energy industry, is currently conducting a pre-feasibility study for the electric interconnection of the Cabo Verde Islands, located off the coast of West Africa. This project is a collaborative effort with RTE International and Consultores de Engenharia e Ambiente (COBA), with support from the government of Luxembourg’s Development-Climate-Energy (DCE) initiative.

The primary objective of this study is to assess the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of interconnecting the islands. This interconnection is crucial for the development of various renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, and green hydrogen initiatives. The study aims to evaluate several key components, such as the potential for integrating both offshore and onshore renewable energy systems, the feasibility of pump storage systems and battery storage, and the environmental impact of the interconnection.

The long-term economic benefits of reducing reliance on fossil fuels are also a critical aspect of this assessment. The project is part of Cabo Verde’s Energy Master Plan (2018-2040), which targets generating 50% of the islands’ electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

### Importance of the Project

The initiative not only addresses Cabo Verde’s energy security concerns but also contributes to global efforts towards sustainable energy development. By leveraging renewable energy sources, the island nation can significantly reduce its carbon footprint, aligning with international climate goals.

### Technical Challenges and Environmental Considerations

One of the significant technical challenges lies in the design of the electrical interconnection system. Ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the transmission infrastructure will be vital for the integration of diverse renewable energy sources. Additionally, the environmental impact assessment will play a crucial role in identifying potential ecological risks and mitigating them through sustainable practices.

### Future Outlook

The successful completion of this pre-feasibility study will pave the way for further investment and technological innovations. It will also set a precedent for similar renewable energy projects in the region, fostering a sustainable and reliable energy sector.
