**BP Pioneers Green Hydrogen Initiative at Spanish Refinery: A Strategic Decarbonization Move**
In a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions, BP has collaborated with Iberdrola to establish a 25 MW green hydrogen facility at its Castellón refinery in Spain. This joint venture, known as Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L., marks a significant milestone in both companies’ commitments to industrial decarbonization.
The project, set to be operational by the latter half of 2026, will utilize Iberdrola’s renewable energy to transform 200 GWh of annual power into green hydrogen. This green hydrogen will replace grey hydrogen currently generated from natural gas, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 23,000 tons annually, equivalent to removing 5,000 cars from the roads each year.
The 25 MW electrolyzer will comprise five modules of 5 MW each, utilizing containerized proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology supplied by Plug Power. This cutting-edge technology will not only enhance efficiency but also ensure that the produced hydrogen complies with European standards for green hydrogen, specifically the Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin criteria.

This initiative is a crucial component of BP’s decarbonization strategy, aligning with broader efforts to transform the Castellón refinery into an integrated energy hub. The project has received significant financial support with a grant of 15 million euros from Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan funded by the NextGenerationEU initiative.
The collaboration between BP and Iberdrola is expected to create approximately 500 new jobs during the construction phase. Once operational, the facility will play a pivotal role in supporting regional economic growth and industrial capabilities.
