Chevron starts production at Gulf of Mexico Anchor field

**Chevron Launches Oil Production at Gulf of Mexico’s Anchor Field with Pioneering Deepwater Technology**

In a significant milestone for Chevron’s operations in the Gulf of Mexico, the company has successfully initiated oil and natural gas production from the Anchor project. This achievement underscores the company’s commitment to using advanced, industry-first deepwater technology to unlock previously inaccessible resources.

Located approximately 225 kilometers off the coast of Louisiana in the Green Canyon area, the Anchor project consists of a system of subsea wells connected to a semi-submersible floating production unit (FPU). The Anchor FPU boasts a production capacity of 75,000 gross barrels of oil per day and 28 million cubic feet of natural gas daily, making it Chevron’s sixth operated facility in the Gulf of Mexico.

The deepwater technology employed by the Anchor project is rated to operate safely at pressures up to 20,000 pounds per square inch (psi), with reservoir depths reaching as far as 34,000 feet below the ocean’s surface. This innovative technology represents a major breakthrough for the energy industry, enabling the access and exploitation of previously challenging resources.

Nigel Hearne, Executive Vice President of Chevron Oil, Products & Gas, highlighted the significance of the Anchor project: “The Anchor initiative signifies a significant advancement for the energy sector. The introduction of this pioneering deepwater technology enables us to access previously challenging resources and fosters similar high-pressure developments within the industry.”

Bruce Niemeyer, President of Chevron Americas Exploration & Production, emphasized the project’s operational success: “This milestone at Anchor illustrates Chevron’s capability to execute projects safely and within budget in the Gulf of Mexico. The Anchor project provides affordable, reliable, and lower carbon intensity oil and natural gas to help meet energy demand while boosting economic activity for Gulf Coast communities.”

The Anchor FPU has been designed with environmental sustainability in mind. It operates as an all-electric facility, using electric motors and electronic controls. Additionally, the FPU employs waste heat and vapor
