**HOLBORN Europa Raffinerie GMBH Chronicles: Implementing Topsoe’s HydroFlex to Revolutionize German Renewable Fuel Production**
In a groundbreaking move, HOLBORN Europa Raffinerie GMBH has contracted with Topsoe AS to deliver cutting-edge technology for the development of a state-of-the-art renewable fuels production complex in Hamburg, Germany. This pivotal agreement signifies a crucial step in HOLBORN’s broader initiative to transition away from traditional crude-based operations and harness the potential of bio-based feedstocks.
The mid-August contract will see Topsoe supply its proprietary HydroFlex technology, designed to convert waste and residue feedstocks into high-quality sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. This transformation is essential for accommodating the specific feedstock needs of the proposed complex, said Lars Bergmann, managing director of HOLBORN’s Hamburg refinery. The technology, which enables the conversion of various organic fats, oils, and greases into drop-in renewable jet and diesel meeting global specifications, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the project’s success.
“HOLBORN’s commitment to the energy transition is unwavering,” Bergmann emphasized. “By leveraging Topsoe’s HydroFlex technology, we are poised to significantly bolster our production of sustainable fuels, aligning with both our company’s long-term goals and the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).”
The proposed hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) complex, part of HOLBORN’s Hamburg-based refinery, is designed to produce approximately 220,000 tons per year of high-quality HVO and SAF. These biofuels will be produced using biomass-based waste and residue feedstocks sourced from the agribusiness sector.
This technological collaboration follows a similar agreement in June where HOLBORN awarded Maire SPA’s Rome-based subsidiaries, KT-Kinetics Technology SPA and NextChem SPA, the contract for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services on the
