### BP Partners for Green Hydrogen Facility at Castellón Refinery

In a significant stride toward industrial decarbonization, **BP** and **Iberdrola** have embarked on a groundbreaking project to construct a large-scale green hydrogen facility at BP’s Castellón refinery in Spain. This venture marks a major milestone in the companies’ shared commitment to transitioning the region’s energy landscape towards a more sustainable future.

#### Key Aspects of the Project

The project, undertaken through their joint venture **Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L.**, involves the construction of a 25 MW electrolyzer. This electrolyzer will be powered by renewable electricity sourced from Iberdrola’s photovoltaic and wind projects through a power purchase agreement (PPA). The electrolysis process will utilize five 5 MW containerized proton exchange membrane (PEM) modules supplied by **Plug Power**. This advanced technology ensures that the green hydrogen produced meets European Commission’s requirements for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO).

#### Funding and Support

The initiative has already secured €15 million in funding from Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, allocated by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU fund. This support underscores the project’s strategic importance in advancing Spain’s renewable hydrogen economy.

#### Environmental Impact

The green hydrogen facility is anticipated to reduce CO2 emissions at the refinery by approximately 23,000 tons annually, equivalent to eliminating the carbon footprint of about 5,000 cars each year. This significant reduction in emissions aligns with BP’s broader decarbonization strategy, which includes transitioning the Castellón refinery into an integrated energy hub.

#### Future Expansion

Assessments are underway to potentially expand the green hydrogen capacity, enabling the supply of green hydrogen to other hard-to-abate sectors within the Valencia region. These sectors include ceramics, chemical industries, and heavy transport. This extension of the project
