**BP and Iberdrola Join Forces to Pioneer Green Hydrogen Production at Castellón Refinery**
BP, the multinational energy company, and Iberdrola España, the Spanish electricity company, have recently initiated a groundbreaking green hydrogen project at BP’s Castellón refinery in Spain. This collaborative effort, launched through their joint venture, Castellón Green Hydrogen SL, marks a significant milestone in the decarbonization of the oil and gas industry.
The 25 MW green hydrogen facility, planned to be operational in the latter half of 2026, will utilize renewable electricity from Iberdrola’s solar and wind projects. This electrolyzer will consist of five modules, each with a 5 MW capacity, powered by containerized proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology provided by Plug Power. The green hydrogen produced at this facility will replace part of the grey hydrogen currently sourced from natural gas, significantly reducing CO2 emissions at the refinery. The project is anticipated to avoid approximately 23,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equating to the removal of around 5,000 cars from the roads each year.
The green hydrogen plant will transform 200 GWh of renewable energy into green hydrogen annually, catapulting BP’s Castellón refinery into an integrated energy hub. This strategic initiative aligns with both companies’ commitments to environmental sustainability and supports Spain’s broader efforts in transitioning towards a low-carbon economy.
### Major Components of the Project
– **Renewable Energy Source**: The facility will be powered by renewable electricity sourced from Iberdrola’s photovoltaic and wind projects, ensuring the green hydrogen produced complies with European Commission’s guidelines for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO).
– **Electrolysis Plant**: The 25 MW electrolyzer, comprising five modules with 5 MW capacity each, will utilize containerized PEM technology to produce approximately 2,800 tons of green hydrogen annually
