bp partnering for green hydrogen project at Castellón refinery

### BP Partners with Iberdrola to Drive Forward Green Hydrogen Ambitions at Castellón Refinery

In a significant move to advance the energy transition, British multinational energy giant bp plc has collaborated with Spanish utility company Iberdrola España SA to establish a 25 MW green hydrogen project at bp’s Castellón refinery in Spain. The venture, formally known as Castellón Green Hydrogen SL, marks a significant milestone in bp’s broader decarbonization strategy and highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

#### Project Overview

Approved for Final Investment Decision (FID) in late July 2024, the green hydrogen project at Castellón will feature the installation of a 25 MW electrolyzer. This critical piece of equipment will utilize renewable electricity, sourced through a power purchase agreement with Iberdrola España, to produce approximately 2,800 tons of green hydrogen annually. This initiative aims to substitute part of the grey hydrogen currently produced from natural gas at the site, thereby significantly reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Specifically, the new green hydrogen plant is expected to mitigate CO2 emissions by around 23,000 tons per year, equivalent to the emissions of about 5,000 cars over the same period.

#### Decarbonization Strategy

Collaborating under a 50-50 joint venture, bp and Iberdrola have demonstrated their shared commitment to addressing greenhouse gas emissions. The installation of this green hydrogen facility is part of bp’s ambitious plan to transform Castellón refinery into an integrated energy hub. This transformation will integrate the production and use of green hydrogen, biofuels, and renewable energy sources—a strategic move that could require investments of up to €2 billion in the long term.

#### Technology and Partnerships

Key to this project is the utilization of containerized proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology. Five modules of 5 MW capacity each will
