### Eni Paves the Way for Livorno Biorefinery with Regulatory Approvals
Eni SpA, a leading Italian energy company, is on the brink of a significant milestone as it prepares to start construction on the country’s third biorefinery in Livorno, Tuscany. This project is part of Eni’s broader strategy to transition towards a more sustainable future, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
#### Regulatory Hurdles Cleared
After a series of preparatory works that began earlier this year, the final regulatory approvals are the remaining hurdles before Eni can initiate the construction process. The Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MOEES) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and input from the National Institute of Health and the regional government of Tuscany have granted the necessary approvals based on an Environmental Impact Assessment submitted in November 2022. This approval is also contingent on the issuance of a single authorization and related building permits by MOEES in consultation with local authorities.
#### Biorefinery Details
The Livorno biorefinery project involves the conversion of an idled conventional crude oil refinery into a state-of-the-art biorefinery. The project includes the construction of three new biorefining plants designed to process diverse biogenic feedstocks such as vegetable waste and residues. These feedstocks will be transformed into renewable fuels including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) diesel, HVO naphtha, and bio-liquefied petroleum gas (bio-LPG).
#### Key Components
1. **Biogenic Feedstock Pretreatment Unit**: This unit will transform waste raw materials, residues, and waste resulting from vegetable products and oils into renewable feedstocks.
2. **500,000 Tons Per Year (TPY) SAF Plant**: Utilizing Eni’s Ecofining technology, this plant will produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by processing 100% biofeedstocks.
