OMV discovers gas in Norwegian Sea, to consider tieback to Aasta Hansteen

### OMV’s Historic Gas Discovery in the Norwegian Sea: A Potential Game-Changer for European Energy Supply

In a significant milestone for the oil and gas industry, OMV (Norge) AS has announced a substantial gas discovery in the Norwegian Sea. The exploration well, 6605/6-1 S, located in production license 1194, has encountered gas reserves estimated to range between 30 and 140 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe). This find is particularly notable given its proximity to existing infrastructure, including the Polarled pipeline and the Equinor-operated Aasta Hansteen field.

### Location and Exploration Details

The successful exploration well was drilled approximately 300 kilometers west of the Norwegian mainland at a water depth of 1,064 meters. The Transocean Norge drilling rig, a converted and certified low emission unit, was instrumental in achieving this significant discovery. The gas was found in Upper Cretaceous reservoir rocks in the Springar and Nise formations, with particularly promising results in the Springar formation, where a 20-meter gas column was encountered, mostly within sandstone reservoirs of moderate to good quality.

### Potential for Subsea Development

The proximity of the gas discovery to the existing infrastructure offers substantial benefits. Leveraging this proximity, OMV plans to develop the discovery as a subsea tieback to the Aasta Hansteen spar platform. This strategic move would not only expedite planning and execution but also reduce development costs and minimize the carbon footprint associated with the operations.

### Strategic Impact and OMV’s Future Plans

By focusing on gas as a transition fuel, OMV aims to increase the share of gas in its production portfolio to 60% by 2030. This ambition is part of a broader strategy to contribute to a more sustainable energy mix and solidify the company’s position as a reliable gas supplier in Europe. According to Berislav Gašo, OMV
