### Shell Sanctions Waterflood Project at Gulf of Mexico’s Vito Field
Shell Offshore Inc., a subsidiary of Shell plc, has made a groundbreaking decision to invest in a waterflood project at its Vito asset in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. This strategic move was formalized with a Final Investment Decision (FID) in August 2024.
#### The Waterflood Project
The waterflood project involves injecting water into the reservoir formation to displace additional oil towards adjacent production wells, thereby re-pressurizing the reservoir. This secondary recovery method is a proven technique for enhancing oil extraction and is set to begin operations in 2027. The process includes drilling three pre-production water injection wells, which will play a crucial role in maximizing the recovery of oil from the Vito field.
This initiative is expected to significantly increase the recoverable resource volume by approximately 60 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe). The estimated resource volume is classified as 2P and 2C under the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ Resource Classification System.
#### The Vito Field
The Vito field, discovered in July 2009, spans four Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) blocks in the Mississippi Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico. Located in over 4,000 feet of water, it is situated approximately 75 miles south of Venice, Louisiana, 150 miles southeast of New Orleans, and 10 miles south of the Shell-operated Mars tension-leg platform.
In February 2023, Shell achieved first oil from the Vito field, marking a significant milestone in the region. This achievement was a result of extensive planning and investment, including the simplification and re-scoping of the original host design in 2015. These changes resulted in a substantial reduction of about 80% in CO2 emissions over the lifetime of the platform as well as a
