Survey: As the Electric Grid Struggles to Meet New Demand, How Are Oil and Gas Companies Getting the Clean Energy They Need?

### How Oil and Gas Companies Are Navigating the Clean Energy Transition Amidst Grid Demands

The energy landscape is witnessing a significant shift as oil and gas companies are increasingly transitioning towards clean energy to power their operations and reduce emissions. This transition is necessitated by the ever-looming challenge of surging electric demand, which the grid is struggling to meet.

**The Emerging Challenge**

Commercial electricity consumption has skyrocketed across various regions critical to the oil and gas sector, including Texas, Oklahoma, and North Dakota, since 2019. This significant surge in demand has intensified the competition for electricity, placing oil and gas companies in a race to secure clean energy sources to power their operations. According to a recent survey conducted by Endeavor Business Intelligence on behalf of NextEra Energy, 88% of oil and gas industry leaders reported that their companies are either actively electrifying or evaluating the potential for electrification of operations.

### The Struggle to Procure Clean Energy

Oil and gas companies face formidable hurdles in procuring clean energy. At least half of the surveyed oil and gas leaders admitted that their companies are struggling to get the energy they need in regions such as the Mountain West, Gulf Coast, and New England. The Upper Midwest was not far behind, with 44% of companies in states like North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska facing similar challenges.

### Innovative Solutions

To overcome these challenges, oil and gas companies are embracing innovative strategies to secure clean energy. One approach is leveraging renewable energy credits, where utilities provide grid electricity offset by renewable energy sources. Thirty percent of surveyed companies are already utilizing this method, while another 54% are actively pursuing it.

Another strategy involves off-site renewable energy projects. Thirty percent of companies are utilizing energy from solar and wind farms located outside their premises, and a further 46% are exploring this option. However, integrating off-site renewables presents significant technical hurdles due to the limitations of grid capacity and infrastructure[1
