In a significant step towards decarbonization, HOLBORN Europa Raffinerie GmbH has contracted with Topsoe AS to provide cutting-edge technology for its upcoming renewable fuels production complex in Hamburg, Germany. This initiative underscores HOLBORN’s commitment to reducing emissions and enhancing the production of sustainable fuels, aligning with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).

Robert Stuart, an expert in the oil and gas industry, highlighted the importance of this collaboration: “The integration of Topsoe’s HydroFlex technology is a strategic move by HOLBORN to transition from traditional crude oil-based refining processes to a more sustainable model. This aligns perfectly with the global push towards renewable energy solutions.”

Topsoe will supply its proprietary HydroFlex technology to enable the processing of waste and residue feedstocks into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. The selection of HydroFlex was critical for accommodating HOLBORN’s specific feedstock requirements, said Lars Bergmann, managing director of HOLBORN’s Hamburg refinery. “This technology allows us to convert various organic fats, oils, and greases into drop-in renewable jet and diesel that meet all global specifications. It is essential for our long-term strategy focused on renewable and circular solutions.”

The new facility will produce approximately 220,000 tonnes of high-quality hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and SAF annually using biomass-based waste and residue feedstocks. This project is part of HOLBORN’s broader initiative to increase the supply of sustainable fuels in line with the company’s commitment to the energy transition.

HOLBORN had previously confirmed the planned HVO complex, which includes a pretreatment unit for renewable feedstocks and the necessary infrastructure to connect the new HVO plant with existing refining operations. This latest contract follows HOLBORN’s June 2024 award to Maire SPA’s Rome-based subsidiaries, KT-K
