In a move aligned with its commitment to the energy transition, Saipem, a global leader in the engineering and construction of major projects for the energy and infrastructure sectors, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Geolog and Ignis H2 Energy to explore innovative solutions for the development of geothermal energy.

### Introduction

Geothermal energy, which harnesses the natural heat within the Earth’s sphere, has long been recognized as a strategic and reliable source of renewable energy. However, despite its potential, geothermal energy remains underutilized. To address this gap, Saipem has joined forces with Geolog, a company specialized in geological formation and drilling solutions, and Ignis H2 Energy, which excels in geothermal resource acquisition, exploration, and development.

### The Partnership

This collaborative effort aims to advance technological solutions and conduct feasibility studies for new geothermal plants. By leveraging their specialized expertise, the three companies aim to unlock the full potential of geothermal resources on both a national and global scale.

Saipem will spearhead the feasibility studies for geothermal plants. The company will assess existing market solutions and identify areas where technological advancements are needed, ensuring that advanced solutions are developed to enhance the use of geothermal energy.

### Key Focus Areas

– **Next-Generation Geothermal Systems**: Saipem is committed to developing next-generation geothermal energy systems that are more efficient and reliable.
– **Offshore Geothermal Energy**: The partnership will also focus on offshore geothermal energy, particularly in the Mediterranean basin, which is rich in such resources.
– **Conversion of Oil & Gas Wells**: Another area of interest is the conversion of existing oil and gas wells to utilize geothermal resources.

### Joint Studies

Under the MOU, Geolog and Ignis will augment Saipem’s efforts by contributing their specialized knowledge in geological assessment and drilling techniques, as well as analyzing the availability of geothermal resources. The joint studies will focus on unconventional geothermal resources, including terrestrial heat sources that are currently underexploited.

### Expertise and Track Record

Saipem brings extensive experience in the development of conventional geothermal projects and wells since the 1970s. The company has a proven track record in offshore, drilling, and construction of floating facilities. This expertise will be invaluable in the development of advanced technical solutions for geothermal energy.
